An energy counter is a counter that, unlike most other counters, is placed on players rather than objects. It represents Energy.

Description

Unlike rad counters (which are also placed on players), energy counters have no inherent rules meaning or effects associated with them. Energy counters may be used to pay the costs of activated and triggered abilities that require energy as payment. Energy counters and the Energy mechanic were introduced in the Kaladesh block.[1] The energy symbol {E} is used to represent a cost for energy counters.

Most cards that grant energy counters also provide a way to spend them. However, because they are placed on the player rather than a specific object, energy counters from one card can be saved up and spent on the abilities of other cards. Energy counters don't go away as phases or steps end, or as the turn ends. There is a limited number of cards that can remove energy counters from players, including Suncleanser and Final Act.

History

After their introduction in the Kaladesh block, energy counters had a cameo appearance in Jumpstart: Historic Horizons (Longtusk Stalker). Later, they were a main feature of Universes Beyond: Fallout and Modern Horizons 3.[2][3]
