Dread counters are a type of counter introduced in The Lost Caverns of Ixalan.

Description

Grasping Shadows uses dread counters to track the number of times a creature attacks alone. Shadows' Lair then trades those counters for card draw.

They appeared again on a test card for the 2024 Las Vegas Planechase Unknown event on No Way Out, a plane card of Duskmourn that starts with three of the counters. They are removed whenever chaos ensues allowing for each player to turn a face-down permanent they control face-up.

Trivia

In Magic Online, the counter is colored green as its considered a positive effect. It shares an icon with Corruption, Death, Despair, Doom, Mannequin, Paralyzation, Petrification and Soul counters.^[1]
