Cell counters are flavored as the cells of Jenova, an ancient alien and major antagonist of the Final Fantasy VII series. They serve as a central plot point for the series' story and the primary crisis of Final Fantasy VII. Jenova cells were used by the Shinra Electric Power Company to genetically modify humans in a misguided attempt to create a human-Cetra hybrid that would allow the company to find the "Promised Land" and the untold riches within. The Jenova Project resulted in significantly enhanced individuals used as solders by the company. It was this project that created Sephiroth and permanently altered Cloud Strife.
