Prey counter are a type of counter introduced in Rivals of Ixalan. They act as a marker for a creature's potential death.

Description

Prey counters first appeared on Tetzimoc, Primal Death in Rivals of Ixalan. The creature has an ability that could be used from a player's hand that would add a Prey counter to a creature. Then whenever it entered the battlefield, it would automatically destroy all of an opponent's creatures with the Prey counter on it regardless of how they ended up on the creature. This represented Tetzimoc being one of the apex predators due to it being one of the Elder Dinosaurs of Ixalan.

Trivia

• In Magic Online, the counter is colored orange as its considered a negative effect and it shares an icon with Egg, Hatchling, Hoofprint, Incarnation and Shell counters.
