Oil counters are a counter type in Magic. They were introduced in Phyrexia: All Will Be One.[1][2][3][4]

Description

Oil counters are a type of counters without inherent rules meaning, but are flavorly tied to the glistening oil.

Permanents that interact with oil counters do so in different ways—some spend them to activate abilities, others require a certain amount or more of them to activate abilities, and some scale their effects based on the number of oil counters present on themselves or other permanents.

Oil counters were designed to synergize with proliferate, ensuring that having more is always beneficial. For example, if a creature has a limited lifespan based on oil counters it has, it would start with a set amount of oil counters and counts down rather than counting up. This design allows proliferate to extend its lifespan rather than hastening its removal.[2]
