Tide counters are a type of counter introduced in Fallen Empires. The counters accumulate, with a negative ability for only having one, a positive ability for having three counters and resetting at four or more.
Description
Tide counters first appeared on Homarid and Tidal Influence in Fallen Empires. Both operate similarly; both permanents start with one counter and gain another every upkeep, and whenever four counters are on them they are all removed, giving them a four-turn cycle that evokes the movement of the tides. At exactly one counter — "low tide" — there is a negative effect: Homarid gets -1/-1 and Tidal Influence gives all blue creatures -2/-0. At exactly three counters — "high tide" — there is a positive effect: Homarid gets +1/+1 and Tidal Influence gives blue creatures +2/+0.
Trivia
- In Magic Online, the counter is colored blue as it's considered a neutral effect and shares their icon with Flood and Ice counters.[1]
