Charge counters are the default counter for noncreature permanents, and are used most often on artifacts. They are the third most common counter in Magic, and are used for tracking the sunburst and station mechanics.

Description

NCC Punch card with charge counters

Some keyword mechanics use charge counters, and some cards interact with charge counters specifically. They are one of the few counter types that exist for reasons other than flavor.[1] Charge counters are deciduous.[2]

In Magic Online, the counter is colored green because it is generally a positive effect. The charge counter shares its icon with Crystal and Gem counters.[3]

History

Charge counters were introduced on the Ice Age cards Ice Cauldron and Jeweled Amulet. Through errata, the earlier Legends cycle of mana batteries was updated to use charge counters, rather than unnamed counters. The Fifth Dawn mechanic sunburst tracks its state using charge counters, as does an Edge of Eternities mechanic, station.

The designed-for-digital Static Discharge originally used perpetual charge counters to track the additional damage it dealt, but was given errata to use the Intensity mechanic when the latter was introduced in Alchemy: Kamigawa.[4]
