Kindle is a slang term used by Magic R&D to describe the spells that look at the graveyard for other copies, getting increasingly stronger dependent on the number of those copies.[1][2]

History

First seen on the eponymous Kindle, the effect was designed by Mark Rosewater to be a non-creature version of Plague Rats.[3]

Odyssey added the Burst cycle. Coldsnap added another cycle and Eldritch Moon a mirrored pair. This design of card tends to appear at least once each time a cycle of common "collect them all" type cards is printed, such as in Magic Origins and Core Set 2020. Undead Servant is the only creature with a Kindle effect.

Similar effects

Later on, designs expanded in the use of playing cards of the same name. They are often common to make the most of drafting experience, where a player could end up with more than four copies in a forty-card deck, which is a significantly different experience than four copies in a sixty-card deck. The biggest category is the ability to tutor multiple copies, whether of themselves or other commons.
