Pupa counters are a type of counter introduced in Legends that would freeze a creature until they were removed, giving that creature a power-up.

Description

Pupa counters first appeared on Cocoon in Legends originally as Change counters before they were given errata to be Pupa counters. Cocoon is an Aura enchantment that taps the creature with 3 Pupa counters. The creature remains tapped while the counters are on it, with one removed for each upkeep. Then, after all are removed, the enchantment is sacrificed, and the creature gains a +1/+1 counter and flying. This represents the creature frozen in the cocoon for several turns until it emerges stronger.

Trivia

Pupa, by definition, is the life stage of some insects transforming.
In Magic Online, the counter is colored orange as its considered a negative effect and shares its icon with Fungus, Growth, Matrix, Petal, Polyp, Rust, Spore and Vitality counters.^[1]
