Vivid is an ability word introduced in Lorwyn Eclipsed that counts the number of colors among permanents you control.[1] This number is between zero and five.

Description

Vivid is a mechanic that rewards collecting permanents of many colors.[2] While ostensibly this requires building a five-color deck, it is also achievable by putting several off-color hybrid cards into a two-color or monocolor deck. This was an experience that was previously seen during Shadowmoor with its heavy hybrid focus. Vivid works in contrast with the previous color-counting mechanics of Converge and Sunburst, which encourage the ability to generate all five colors of mana rather than finding ways to put other colors of permanents into play.

Each vivid ability uses this number differently. If it's in the effect of an activated ability or triggered ability, you count the number of colors among permanents you control as that ability resolves. Lands are usually colorless, so they won't help vivid abilities unless something like Shimmerwilds Growth or Painter's Servant gives them a color.

Vivid as a name calls back to the Vivid lands, a cycle of five-color lands from Lorwyn. Vivid was first explored with Eventide's Bloom Tender, which is the most common application of Vivid before becoming an ability word: Faeburrow Elder (Throne of Eldraine) and Tarnation Vista (The Big Score) are similar. Soul of Ravnica and Chromatic Orrery both draw cards, and Conqueror's Flail produces a stat boost. Other proto-Vivid abilities use subsets of permanents, such as Earthen Ally (Allies), Sisay, Weatherlight Captain (Legendary), and Tarnation Vista (monocolored). More broadly, some cards do a certain action for each color, but they are not focused on permanents; rather, they look at cards in the graveyard or library.

  • The colors are white, blue, black, red, and green. Colorless is not a color.
  • Lands are normally colorless permanents, even if they tap for mana of a certain color.
