Augment is a silver-bordered keyword ability featured in Unstable and Unsanctioned. It is closely related to the Host supertype.[2][3][4] The cards with augment have their art one-sided to the right, leaving the right side without margin.
Description
When you pay the augment cost, you reveal the card from your hand and combine it with target host. Augment can only be played at sorcery speed. Augment creatures are all defined by having a color indicator, a stat increase in lieu of power and toughness, and a trigger condition that modifies the enters-the-battlefield ability that Hosts all have.
The augment ability can only be activated if the card with augment is in your hand. It's the only way to play the cards with augment because they don't have a casting cost. The activation includes revealing the card with augment as part of the cost. When activated, the card is combined with a host creature you control. If there is no legal target when resolving the ability, then the card with augment returns to the player's hand.[5]
Like Meld, Augment was inspired by the unpublished Link-mechanic.
Creature cards with augment have a layout without a border on their right.[2] Instead, a vertical metal bar finishes off the art, much like the one that runs through the middle of the host creatures. Creatures with augment lack a mana cost and use a color indicator.
Host/Augment is relatively close to making it into black border.[6] The most distinctive mechanical oddity is the text-changing effect that replaces an enters-the-battlefield trigger with a different one.
Rulings
- Augment cards are creature cards with a mana value of 0.[7]
- An augmented host functions as a singular creature.[8]
