Augment is a silver-bordered keyword ability featured in Unstable and Unsanctioned. Creature cards with augment do not have casting costs, and can only be played via the augment ability, which combines them with a host creature already on the battlefield.[2][3][4]
Description
Augment can only be activated while the card with augment is in the player's hand, and can only be activated at sorcery speed. The card is revealed as a part of the ability's cost. When activated, the card is combined with a host creature you control. If there is no legal target when the ability resolves, the card with augment returns to the player's hand.[5]
Creatures with augment have no mana cost and use a color indicator. The text box contains an incomplete sentence that describes the trigger condition of a triggered ability. All host creatures have an ability that triggers when they enter, and after augment resolves, the augment's trigger condition replaces the enter clause, allowing the ability to trigger repeatedly. Rather than a set power and toughness, cards with augment have an adjustment to the power and toughness of their host creature.
Creature cards with augment have no border or margin on the right-hand side of the card.[2] A metal bar on the right edge of the artwork matches a similar illustration on host creature cards, indicating the correct alignment of the merged cards.
Host and augment are "pretty close" to being printed in black border.[6] The most distinctive mechanical oddity is the text-changing effect that replaces an enters-the-battlefield trigger with a different one. Like Meld, augment was inspired by the unpublished link mechanic.[citation needed]
