Death counters are a type of counter introduced in Visions. It acts as a tracker for sending a creature into Exile when it dies.

Description

Death counters first appeared on Bogardan Phoenix in Visions. It is a creature with an ability that returns it to the battlefield on its death with a Death counter. Then when it dies again with the counter on it, it is exiled instead. Their usage in this case represents the power of a phoenix to reincarnate itself on its death.

Death counters are nearly identical in functionality to finality counters, except that they exile from the graveyard rather than creating a replacement effect.

Trivia

In Magic Online, the counter is colored orange as its considered a negative effect. It shares an icon with Corruption, Despair, Doom, Dread, Mannequin, Paralyzation, Petrification and Soul counters.^[1]
