Flood counters are a type of counter introduced in Mirrodin. They are usually related to water-themed effects.

Description

Flood counters first appeared on Quicksilver Fountain in Mirrodin. It is an artifact that lets players put a flood counter on a non-island land, turning it into an Island. This represents land flooding. If all the lands on the battlefield become islands, then the artifact removes all the flood counters.

History

After their debut in Mirrodin, they wouldn't appear again until Aquitect's Will in Lorwyn which was a Kindred Sorcery that put a flood counter on land making it an Island in addition to its other types

Amonkhet saw the return of the counters on Bounty of the Luxa which was an Enchantment with different effects if it has a flood counter or not. It would gain a flood counter each turn alongside letting the player draw a card. If it already has a counter, all the counters would be removed and Colorless manaBlue manaGreen mana is added for the player.

Flood Counters were a perfect fit for the Universes Beyond Doctor Who card The Flood of Mars, which used the counters to show the spread of the Flood infection.[1] Similarly, they were used on Eluge, the Shoreless Sea in Bloomburrow to represent the Calamity Beasts effect on its surroundings.

Trivia

  • In Magic Online, Flood counters are always blue due to thematic reasons representing the color of water despite it normally being the color of neutral effect counters and sharing their icon with Ice and Tide counters.[2]
