Duty counters are a type of counter introduced in the Murders at Karlov Manor Commander decks.

Description

Duty counters first appeared on Immortal Obligation, referencing the Orzhov Syndicate raising and conscripting spirits, and how even after death, your debt is still due. It returns a creature from an opponents graveyard under their control but with one of the counters on it. For as long as the creature has that counter, it makes the them goaded and doesn’t allow the creature to attack or defend the placing player or their permanents. This essentially forces the opponent to attack other players in a Commander game while making the placing player mostly immune to it. These effects reference the creatures debt to the player for brining it back to life.
