Flurry is an ability word introduced in Tarkir: Dragonstorm, where it is tied to the Jeskai Way clan.[1]

Description

Flurry is a triggered ability that gives a bonus effect whenever you cast your second spell in a turn. Flurry abilities can only trigger once each turn, and creatures with flurry have to be under their owner's control when that player casts their second spell for the turn.

Previously, Flurry was an unworded draft theme in Oath of the Gatewatch, Kaldheim, Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate, and Outlaws of Thunder Junction. It was also featured as the flavor word Flurry of Blows on Monk of the Open Hand (Forgotten Realms). Relatedly, Oath of the Gatewatch had Surge as a keyword ability, which similarly encouraged playing two spells. There are also have been various other single cards that have "second spell cast" abilities. Fittingly, the theme has been focused three times in blue, and twice each in white and red. There are no current plans to errata older cards.[2]

Rulings

From the Release Notes for Tarkir: Dragonstorm (January 7, 2025)[3]

  • Spells that were cast before a permanent with flurry count. If that permanent was the first spell you cast that turn, the next spell you cast that turn is your second spell.

From the mechanics article for Tarkir: Dragonstorm (March 18, 2025)[1]

  • Each flurry ability is a triggered ability that triggers whenever you cast your second spell in a turn. It doesn't matter what happened to the first spell. It may have resolved or been countered. It may even still be on the stack!
  • The flurry ability will resolve before the spell that caused it to trigger.
  • Creatures with flurry abilities have to be under your control to see that spell being cast. They don't have to see the first spell, though. If Devoted Duelist is your second spell in a turn, it won't trigger itself, but it can be your first spell, as long as it resolves before you cast your second.
