Job select is a keyword ability for equipment cards introduced in Final Fantasy.[1][2] It is mechanically similar to Living weapon and For Mirrodin! but it creates a Colorless mana 1/1 Hero token.

Description

When an Equipment with Job select enters, you create a 1/1 colorless Hero creature token, then attach that Equipment to the newly created token. Each Equipment with job select works like other Equipment. Its other abilities will tell you how it benefits the equipped creature, and it can be attached to other creatures you control using its equip ability.[2]

The third of the creature-equipment design keywords uses a 1/1 token, which gives cheaper equipment a different texture than the other two previous keywords. Job Select equipment has a clause on their equipped-creature ability that grants an additional job to their subtype, playing into the "select" part of the keyword's name. There are four Wizard equipment, three Knights, two Clerics, and one each of Performer, Warrior, Rogue, Assassin, Bard, Monk, Ninja, Shaman, Samurai and Artificer.

The flavor words on these equipments use the names of famous weapons from the Final Fantasy video game. All of them are cited as being from the first or fourteenth game, the six from the first corresponding to the six main character classes in that game.

Rules

From the glossary of the Comprehensive Rules (September 19, 2025—Marvel's Spider-Man)

Job Select
A keyword ability that creates a 1/1 colorless Hero creature token and then attaches the Equipment with the ability to that token. See rule 702.182, “Job Select.”

From the Comprehensive Rules (September 19, 2025—Marvel's Spider-Man)

  • 702.182. Job Select
    • 702.182a Job select is a triggered ability. “Job select” means “When this Equipment enters, create a 1/1 colorless Hero creature token, then attach this Equipment to it.”

Rulings

  • Like other Equipment, each Equipment with job select has an equip cost. You can pay this cost to attach an Equipment to another creature you control.
  • If the Equipment is no longer on the battlefield as the job select ability resolves, you'll still create the Hero token, although you won't attach any Equipment to it.
  • The Hero token enters as a 1/1 creature, then the Equipment becomes attached to it. Abilities that trigger when a creature enters the battlefield see that a 1/1 creature entered the battlefield.[3]
  • If the Hero token is destroyed, the Equipment stays on the battlefield.
  • You may pay the Equipment's equip cost as normal to move it from the Hero token to another creature you control.
  • If the job select ability causes two Hero tokens to be created (due to an effect such as that of Doubling Season), the Equipment becomes attached to only one of them.

  • Eight other Equipment also generate a 1/1 and attach themselves to it, of which four are mechanically identical to Job select barring the token's color.
