Infection counters are a type of counter introduced in Alliances.

Description

Infection counters first appeared on Diseased Vermin in Alliances. They are created on the creature whenever it deals damage to an enemy player. Damage would then be dealt to a target opponent based on how many infection counters are on the creature at each upkeep. The counters appeared once again in Urza's Destiny on Festering Wound which had a similar effect. In this case it was an enchantment for a creature which created a counter on each upkeep. It would then deal damage to the creature's controller each upkeep based on the number of infection counters on it.

Universes Beyond

Infection counters reappeared in the Tyranid Swarm commander deck from Warhammer 40,000 Commander Decks where they are used to represent creatures that have been infected by Genestealers.[1]

Trivia

In Magic Online, the counter is colored green as its considered a positive effect and it shares an icon with Blood, Carrion, Corpse, Eyeball, and Plague counters.[2]
