Eminence is an ability word introduced in Commander 2017 that represents abilities which function from the command zone or the battlefield.

History

Oloro, Ageless Ascetic from Commander 2013 featured a precursor to Eminence, albeit with its command zone effect separate from its identical on-battlefield effect.

Eminence was introduced in Commander 2017 on four legendary creatures (The Ur-Dragon, Inalla, Archmage Ritualist, Edgar Markov, and Arahbo, Roar of the World), that were the primary commander cards of their respective typal decks.[1][2]

Eminence appeared as a one-off in March of the Machine commander decks.

Rulings

  • Eminence grants some abilities to work as long as the creature is in the command zone or on the battlefield.
  • Eminence triggered abilities require the associated creature be on the battlefield or in the command zone as the trigger event occurs and as the triggered ability resolves. If the creature is in an appropriate zone as the trigger event occurs but leaves that zone, the ability will not do anything as it resolves.
  • If a commander is on the battlefield and its eminence ability triggers, but is put into the command zone before that ability resolves, that ability will not do anything as it resolves. This is because an object that changes zones is considered a new object.

Mono Eminence

Mono Eminence is an ability word seen on a cycle of Unknown Event test cards. It is similar to regular eminence but applies the extra deck-building condition of having to stick to a specific mono colored identity.
