Lore counters are a type of counter introduced in Magic 2012 but later became more commonly related to Sagas allowing for tracking what chapter of the saga is active.
Description
Lore counters first appeared in Magic 2012 with Mind Unbound where they acted as an upkeep tracker for how many cards the enchantment would let the player draw each turn. Two other uses of lore counters were with Scroll of the Masters in Fate Reforged and Myth Realized in Dragons of Tarkir. Both of these gains a Lore counter every time a noncreature spell was cast by the player and then can add power and toughness onto the board equal to the lore counters: Scroll of the Masters gives it to other creatures, while Myth Realized does so by animating into a creature. The insinuation of Myth Realized is that it is a manifestation of the lost Scroll of the Masters. Myth Realized can also add lore counters for mana. These original three usages were unrelated to the Sagas these counters later became more known for.
With the introduction of Sagas in Dominaria, Lore counters became an integral part of that enchantment type as they acted as the tracker for which chapter of the Saga was activated, adding one each pre-combat main phase. Subsequent sets with Sagas continued to use Lore counters on them.
In later sets, some cards had effects that put extra Lore counters on sagas. Keldon Warcaller in Dominaria would add them on Sagas whenever it attacked. Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty later introduced Satsuki, the Living Lore which had an activated ability to put Lore counters on sagas while Storyweave was a modal instant that in which one of the effects was adding two Lore counters to a saga.
Trivia
- In Magic Online, the counter is colored green as it's considered a positive effect and shares its icon with Filibuster, Landmark, Level, Page, Plot, Quest, and Study counters.[1]
