Penguin is an acorn creature type, used for flightless birds with black upper parts and white underparts and wings developed into flippers for swimming under water.
History
Penguins first appeared in the acorn Unhinged set on the aura Curse of the Fire Penguin. The joke being a human turning into a penguin via fire with his face gaining a bill and his hands becoming flippers.
Penguins also appear to exist on Bablovia as one was seen in the company of a Border Guardian wearing a necklace holding a bowl of water with an octopus inside. They have yet to appear on an eternal card.
Design restrictions
Penguins often run afoul of Magic's design standard that "all birds [in Magic] fly."[1] Players often use wings in a creature's illustration as a visual key that the creature has flying and Design prefers to create cards with that expectation in mind.[2] While this doesn't prevent penguins from being designed, it greatly increases the hurdle that card needs to pass in order to see print.
