Minion is a creature class, used for cards that depict those who work the will of overtly evil forces or organizations. Minions are black-hearted individuals who knowingly bring harm upon others through subterfuge or open malice.

History

The Creature type first appeared in Mirage (Shauku's Minion). Two cards from Ice Age gained the type retroactively: Minion of Leshrac and Minion of Tevesh Szat. Since then more than 40 cards have featured the type.[2] There are also cases of individuals who have been identified as minions in flavor terms, yet lack the creature type, for example Gwafa Hazid and Rakka Mar. Tidewater Minion received the type during the Great Creature Type Update, but it has no discernable affiliation, even on Ravnica.

Mark Rosewater indicated in 2014 that the type wouldn't be used anymore,[3][4] but it would reappear on Xantcha, Sleeper Agent in Commander 2018 and on Chainer, Nightmare Adept and K'rrik, Son of Yawgmoth in Commander 2019.[5] It has also seen reprints in Jumpstart with Phyrexian Broodlings, and in Modern Horizons 2 with Braids, Cabal Minion, Bone Shredder, and Chainer again. Phyrexian Broodlings and Chainer were further featured in digital Jumpstart and Jumpstart: Historic Horizons respectively, adding the creature type to Arena.
