Archaeologist is an obsolete creature type and job used to represent people who study or practice the study of the past through material remains.

Description

Archaeologist debuted as a creature type in Antiquities on Argivian Archaeologist, which depicted a human archaeologist from Argive. The type was later made obsolete and removed in the Grand Creature Type Update, with the original card's type becoming an Artificer instead. Since then, other archaeologists have also been typed as scout and wizard alongside artificer.

Storyline

Dominaria

Dominaria is known to have various archaeologists due to its long history. It is said that archaeologists of Argive are fascinated by the lore of ancient struggles and search incessantly for remnants of an earlier, more powerful era.[1] There are also archeologists from Fallaji[2] as well as other Daring Archaeolgists on the plane.[3] At Koilos, they used automatons inspired by their previous discoveries to guard the excavations.[4]

Ixalan

The Oltec have Archaeologists who search Ixalan's Core for ancient artifacts.[5]

Mirrodin

Before its conversion into New Phyrexia, some goblins acted as archaeologists searching for artifacts on the plane. One named Durg poked a metal ball-like artifact, which exploded, blowing him away.[6] It was also said the Neurok saw their artificers as archaeologists who cleared away falsehoods to see the truth hidden beneath.[7]

Zendikar

Zendikar is home to Ardenn, a kor archaeologist who explored the Skyclaves of the plane in search of ancient Kor artifacts.

Unknown

On an unknown plane, wizards act as Mystic Archaeologists, studying magical artifacts.[8] On another, an archeologist named Kerrin used Lightning-Core Excavators to dig, but they were prone to explode, causing him to question if they should use something else.[9]

Universes Beyond

A background for Passionate Archaeologist was released with Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate and later given new art in a Secret Lair for Uncharted in the Secret Lair Drop Series: PlayStation Superdrop.
