Ancestor is an obsolete creature type job for an elder member of a tribe or family. It is also often used to refer to spirits of past family.

History

Ancestor debuted as a creature type in Mirage on the card Auspicious Ancestor which appears as an older human wearing a robe that was able to grant life. The type was later dropped in the Grand Creature Type Update, and it was given errata to be a Human Cleric.[1] It has never been reprinted with its new type line as it is on the Reserved List. The Auspicious Ancestor grants life when it dies or allows for paying of one colorless mana when a white spell is cast to gain 1 life as well. These are likely why it became a cleric.

Storyline

In the storyline, some characters reference Ancestors with Betor being known as the "Ancestor's Voice", Obuun being known as a "Mul Daya Ancestor", and Teshar being called the "Ancestor's Apostle".

Dominaria

On Otaria, The Order worships a sky goddess known as The Ancestor.

Tarkir

On Tarkir, the Abzan Houses are empowered by their connection to the spirits of their ancestors. When an ancestor is disowned by the Houses, they try to seek redemption long after their death.[2] The ancestors are connected to the Abzan via Kin-Trees and if they lose that connection they become unrooted and are condemned to a restless existence as without the purpose of family connection, most grow violent and angry.[3]
