Sheep is a creature type used for cards that depict ruminant mammals of the genus Ovis, bred in a number of domesticated varieties for wool and meat.

History

Sheep used to be a token-only creature type. These Sheep tokens were produced by Ovinomancer from Visions and Flock of Rabid Sheep from Unglued. This was changed in the Grand Creature Type Update when the Sheep subtype was added to the artifact creature card Rustspore Ram from Mirrodin. Much later, Journey into Nyx added Nyx-Fleece Ram and Ravnica Allegiance added Gatebreaker Ram.

Trivia

  • Unglued featured a Sheep token with unspecified power and toughness, meant to be used with Flock of Rabid Sheep
    • In truth, the tokens produced by Flock of Rabid Sheep should have been Rabid-Sheep. Or Rabid should have been a separate subtype like Minor. This was never the case, and all subtypes from the Un-sets were removed from the official list in the Grand Creature Type Update, anyway. Under the present rules, they are Sheep-tokens "called Rabid Sheep".
  • Ovinomancer is a tribute to the Blizzard computer game Warcraft, in which the spell Polymorph turns opposing units into sheep. The game was an R&D favorite during the Visions design period.[1]

Tokens

Acorn cards that create a token are marked with {A}.
