Mantis is an obsolete creature type which represented an order of insects with elongated bodies, triangular heads with bulging eyes supported on flexible necks, and greatly enlarged forelegs.

Description

Mantis debut as a creature type in Mirage on Giant Mantis. During the development of the Mirage block releases on Magic Online, R&D took the position that reprinting cards digitally allowed them to update the creature types of those cards to better support typal strategies. This resulted in an errata update to Giant Mantis so it was an Insect instead of Mantis.[1] It was later physically reprinted with the Insect type in Battle for Zendikar.

Storyline

Dominaria

Giant Mantises were first seen on Dominaria. A type of artificial mantis known as the Mantis Engine was created on Dominaria during the time of Urza. A sapient race of humanoid insects known as the Nantuko resemble mantis and have been seen on Dominaria.

Mirrodin / New Phyrexia

Mirrodin had a variety of Tangle Mantis which potentially became the Phyrexian Lattice-Blade Mantis after the plane became New Phyrexia.

Tarkir

On Tarkir, Riders of the Jeskai Way are trained to control and ride wild mantises at the isolated Highspire Stronghold. These mantises make for dangerous mounts, never forming a sense of loyalty toward their riders, who must take care to always be on their guard.

Zendikar

Giant Mantises and Nantuko have been seen on Zendikar.
