Lore
The 20 Primarchs were created to be the immortal, superhuman generals and proconsuls of the Emperor's Great Crusade to reunite the scattered Human worlds and tribes into one empire. Primarchs were bred to be perfect generals, warriors and statesmen and each embodied an aspect of war. They are larger, stronger, faster, and smarter than any normal Human or Astartes. They possessed a potent charisma and martial prowess that made them like the mythical gods of old. They have incredible resistance to disease, old age and, supposedly, the petty failings of lesser men. Their genomes later served as the genetic templates from which the Emperor crafted the Astartes.
Eventually, half of the Primarchs would fall to Chaos and turn against the Emperor, starting a civil war in the Imperium known as the Horus Heresy. Some of these Primarchs would then become daemons serving their respective Chaos gods.
