Gremlin is a primarily red creature type that have an inclination to damage or dismantle machinery.[1] Phyrexian Gremlins had the Gremlins type and was the only representative of their race for 18 years, followed by the similarly-Phyrexian Flensermite which was the first that had the type printed on it. The type was ported over to red with Kaladesh block as a less-sapient Goblin substitute.

Storyline

Avishkari/Kaladeshi Gremlins

Unlike the Black-aligned Phyrexian gremlins, Avishkari gremlins are primarily Red-aligned. They are non-sapient, six-limbed, vaguely anteater- or aardvark-like creatures that feed on aether, dismantling artifacts to get it.[2] Their saliva is corrosive, allowing them to breach through metal hulls to reach their food. When they feed they glow in a faint blue color. As a side effect of their extremely messy feeding, much of the aether is liberated back into the environment. Thus gremlins embody the "liberate" step of the Aether Cycle. Their crucial role is often unappreciated by the former owners of their meals.[3]

Gremlins breed during the warm season.[4] Their young are called grubs.

Gremlins are deterred by bandar urine.[4]

Duskmourn's Gremlins

Duskmourn's gremlins are chaotic beings who delight in mischief and pranks.[5] They indiscriminately antagonize both survivors and other denizens of the House but can be partially tamed if treated with kindness.[6]

Ikorian Gremlins

Ikorian gremlins are also red-aligned. They are muscled monsters with large protruding filaments along their spine. These gremlins can spit fire (Blisterspit Gremlin).

Mirran/Phyrexian Gremlins

Two types of gremlins have been seen, with one type from each incarnation of Phyrexia: the Phyrexian Gremlins from the original plane and the Flensermite from Mirrodin.[7][8] The original Phyrexian gremlins were the same type of being as ouphes, and were amidst the original inhabitants of their plane before Yawgmoth arrived, later being repurposed into menial labor units and artifact reprocessors. They were short, often hairy, ebon-black beings that were semi-intelligent at best. They evinced an extreme, almost gleeful, excitement at the prospect of destroying artifacts and artificers, and descended en masse upon anyone unfortunate enough to stumble into their domain.[9]
