Whale is a seldom-used blue creature type used for marine mammals that can vary greatly in size. Distinguishing features include fluked tails and blowholes for expelling water. They are hunted as a source of meat, blubber, and bone.
History
The first creature to bear the type was Killer Whale in Exodus. The Narwhal from Homelands was issued errata in the Grand Creature Type Update to become a Whale instead of subtype Narwhal. The third, and last for most of Magic's history, card with the subtype Whale was Great Whale from Urza's Saga. More recently, however, Magic 2014 has added Colossal Whale and whales were also featured in Kaladesh block.
Storyline
Avishkar
The Skywhales of Avishkar are found in the aethersphere of the plane, living in the sky instead of the sea. They are hunted by whalers.
The Edge
Enormous space whales wander the Edge, flying through the space between worlds.
Ikoria
Elemental whales can be found in both the seas and skies of Ikoria, where they are known to be taken as companions by Bonders.
Ulgrotha
Narwhals can be found on Ulgrotha, where their horns are wielded as weapons by sea Trolls.

Trivia
- Prior to Khans of Tarkir's Wetland Sambar (an elk), whales were the only real-world mammals (aside from humans) to be featured in Blue.
- Ukkima, Stalking Shadow is the first legendary Whale.
- Pursued Whale takes inspiration from Moby-Dick, while Colossal Whale takes cues from either the story of Jonah or Pinnochio.
- "Whale" is also the nickname for players who are willing to spend large amounts of money on collectible products.
