Martyr is an obsolete creature type and job used to represent people who suffer or die, often willingly, for their religious or political beliefs.

Description

Martyr debuted as a creature type in Mirage on Vigilant Martyr, which appeared as a human from Dominaria dressed in robes, wielding a staff, and wearing a helmet. It could sacrifice itself to regenerate another creature or to counter spells that target enchantments. The type was later made obsolete and removed in the Grand Creature Type Update with the original card's type becoming just Cleric.[1] The concept of a Matyr has been referenced on several planes including Amonkhet, Dominaria, Innistrad, Ixalan, and Ravnica. Most Martyr-related cards involve sacrifice or have triggers on the creature's death. Coldsnap featured a cycle of Martyrs in each color that allowed their controller to reveal cards and sacrifice them for differing effects.
