Spawn is a blue and colorless creature type used for cards and tokens that depict any creature that is regarded as the offspring of some concept, place, character or creature.

History

The first card to bear the type was Elder Spawn in Legends, but the subtype was changed to Elemental in the Grand Creature Type Update. Spawning Pit from Darksteel still kept producing Spawn tokens.

It was later reinvented to depict a job of Eldrazi tokens created by several cards from Rise of the Eldrazi. Each of the three Eldrazi Titans (Ulamog, Emrakul and Kozilek) spawns its own "brood lineage." The three brood lineages are composed of Eldrazi Drones and subordinate spawns, each reflecting the image of its progenitor. No nontoken Spawn were printed and all were colorless 0/1 creatures that could be sacrificed to add . In the return block Battle for Zendikar, the Spawn were replaced by the more powerful Scion, which were the same but were 1/1s. The revisit to Eldrazi in Modern Horizons 3 returned to using Spawn.

Elder Spawn wasn't changed back to its original type until the September 2011 Rules Update of Innistrad. It remains the only card to be typed Spawn.

The dreaded Elder Spawn are arcane spells gone awry, manifesting themselves in physical forms that most beings find unsettling or even upsetting.

Trivia

• Tombstone Stairwell originally produced tombspawn tokens, but this was changed to a Zombie token named Tombspawn with the digital release of Mirage on Magic Online.
