Lichenthrope is an obsolete creature type for a species of plant fungus humanoids from Dominaria.

History

Lichenthrope originally debuted as a type in Visions on the eponymous named Lichenthrope. With the digital release of Visions in Magic Online the type was given errata to instead be Plant Fungus.[1] This is since Lichen are complex symbiotic lifeforms comprised of both fungi and algae living in a mutually beneficial relationship. While algae are technically not plants, they share a common ancestor. Lichenthrope appears to be humanoid lichen growing off the side of a tree. The "-thrope" part of their name is likely a reference to Lycanthropes, also known as werewolves, which are humans that turn into wolves. This implies that the Lichenthrope is potentially a human that turns into a lichen.
