Stone is an obsolete token creature type for creatures that were turned to stone and acted as a wall. In general, stone is a solid mass of minerals. It later became an artifact type.

History

Stone debuted as a creature type in Mirage on tokens created by the Basalt Golem artifact creature. It created a Stone token that was a 0/2 colorless artifact creature that also counted as a Wall. This represents it turning the creatures into stone statues of themselves. The "counts as a Wall" was due to Walls having their own rules at that time before Defender being introduced. With the digital release of Mirage for Magic Online, it was given errata to just be Wall tokens instead. The type was removed from the Comprehensive Rules with the release of Ravnica: City of Guilds.[1] The type was never printed on any card or token, only mentioned in the original printing of Basalt Golem and within the comprehensive rules as a type.

Storyline

Other than its original use, most references to stone in creatures are on golems and gargoyles, which are often made of stone, while Gorgons and Basilisks are known to turn other creatures to stone. Notable characters that reference stone are Alpharael, who is called Stonechosen, while Damia is known as the "Sage of Stone", and Stonebrow is called the "Face of Stone". On Rath, many creatures are made of flowstone.

In Universes Beyond, Denethor from Lord of the Rings is referred to as the "Stone Seer" while Tombstone is a Marvel villain.
