Sand is a rarely used creature type, depicting creatures made up of a loose granular substance, typically pale yellowish brown. For almost thirty years it used to be token-specific and mainly combined with the Warrior type.

History

The type was first used for Hazezon Tamar (Legends) to represent the storyline that he could create Sand copies of himself. Until the printing of the Dune-Brood Nephilim, it was the only use of this token. The Nephilim is the only example where Sand-tokens are used on their own.

Hazezon would get another iteration years later in Dominaria United with the box topper Hazezon, Shaper of Sand. Sand warriors were reused again for the Thunder Junction Commander card Sand Scout, and Desert Warfare in Modern Horizons 3.

In 2025, the creature type was first used on the type line of a non-token card, in the Universes Beyond Marvel's Spider-Man set.

Trivia

  • Ironically, Sand Golem never received this creature type, despite being made of sand itself.
  • The Elemental created by Hostile Desert also didn't receive the type, although it depicts a creature of sand.
  • Basri Ket, the sand-mage from Amonkhet hasn't yet been released on a card featuring sand tokens.
