Incubator is a predefined token and artifact type that debuted in March of the Machine.[1][2] It is created exclusively through the Incubate mechanic.

Description

Incubators are Phyrexian growth pods used to create new Phyrexian soldiers. They are the front-face of a double-faced token card.

Incubate creates an Incubator artifact token with N +1/+1 counters on it, which can be transformed into a 0/0 Phyrexian creature for {2}.

Rules

From the glossary of the Comprehensive Rules (June 7, 2024—Modern Horizons 3)

Incubator Token
An Incubator token is a transforming double-faced token. Its front face is a colorless Incubator artifact with “{2}: Transform this artifact.” Its back face is a 0/0 colorless Phyrexian artifact creature named “Phyrexian Token.” For more information about predefined tokens, see rule 111.10.

Trivia

  • Incubator tokens are the first real double-faced token cards.
  • The instruction to incubate include a number which indicates how many +1/+1 counters to put on the Incubator token. Those counters don't do much while the token has its front face up, but are necessary to keep the Phyrexian artifact creature alive once it transforms.
