Aurochs is a seldom-used green creature type used to represent an ancestor of domestic cattle, far larger than most modern cattle, with a shoulder height of 2 metres (6.6ft) and a weight of 1,000 kilograms. Thus far, the type has only been connected to the Ice Age of Dominaria.

History

The first creature to bear the type was the archetypal Aurochs in the Ice Age set. The type was revived for Coldsnap which had Aurochs Herd, Bull Aurochs, and Rimehorn Aurochs. Aurochs commonly have trample and "Whenever ~ attacks, it gets +1/+0 until end of turn for each other attacking Aurochs". They are also featured in the art of Stampede and Tromp the Domain, both of which depict a stampede of Aurochs. In other sets, bovines often get the Ox creature type, except for the acorn Cow type and the Bison type.

Storyline

Dominaria

Aurochs were common during the Ice Age of Dominaria and later in the the Thaw. Aurochs herds were often content to graze upon grass buried under the snow unless the bull provided the dissenting urge to charge, which rallied them towards a target[1] Disa the Restless once wrote in her journal about a stampede of Aurochs, commenting that the horizon darkened with their coming, making it too late to escape. No safety could be found in the icefields from them, and the only way to survive was to hide within a crevice.[2] During the Temporal Crisis of Dominaria, a large herd was seen that was said to have clumps of salt from Benalia, moss from Llanowar, dust from Hurloon, and ash from as far as Urborg under their feet.[3]
