Wave is an obsolete token creature type for waves in bodies of water that acted as walls. In general, waves are a propagating disturbance or movement of energy through a medium.

History

Wave debuted as a creature type in Mirage on tokens created by the Tidal Wave instant. It created a Wave token that was a 5/5 blue creature that also counted as a Wall. The "counts as a Wall" was due to Walls having their own rules at that time prior to Defender being introduced. With the digital release of Mirage for Magic Online, it was given errata to just be Wall tokens instead. The type was removed from the Comprehensive Rules with the release of Ravnica: City of Guilds.[1] The type was never printed on any card or token, only mentioned in the original printing of Tidal Wave and within the comprehensive rules as a type.

Other than its original use, most references to waves are via sorceries or instants representing discharges of water or energy. Several named characters have epithets related to waves with Crucias known as the "Titan of the Waves", Kiora called "The Crushing Wave", and Kopala referred to as the "Warden of Waves". Merfolk often have wave-related names and titles due to their close association with water.
