Sorcerer is a job. It is the primary red spellcaster. Originally introduced in Arabian Nights, the subtype was retired as part of the Grand Creature Type Update in 2007. It was reintroduced in Lorwyn Eclipsed to help cover a gap created by Design's reduction in the use of the Shaman type.[1]
History
Sorcerers were part of the game since the Prodigal Sorcerer was introduced in Alpha, but were almost always considered to be a type of wizards. Only Sorceress Queen (Arabian Nights) was printed with the type "Sorceress" and Ovinomancer (Visions) with the type Sorcerer, but both became Wizards in the Grand Creature Type Update.
Sorcerer was re-introduced in Lorwyn Eclipsed. It’s not meant as a one-for-one replacement for Shaman (which has some issues), but it will replace it on some cards.[2][3] At the time of the release, nearly two dozen creatures from Magic's history that were named as sorcerers received the type, as well. None of these creatures lost any types they previously had.[4] Final Fantasy sorcerers were notably excluded from this update.
