Avatar is a creature type used for beings which are an aspect, projection, or embodiment of a larger power or concept. It is one of the original creature types from Alpha and is still in regular use. Avatars are powerful beings that exist throughout the Multiverse; the subtype has also been used for some Universes Beyond characters.

Characteristics

The Avatar subtype first appeared on the card Personal Incarnation (Alpha). Avatars have since been printed in many sets and across all five colors. They tend toward higher mana values, with only two costing less than three mana. Most are rare or mythic rare.

Avatars typically embody a power or concept larger than themselves. These can include emotions (Avatar of Fury), virtues (Avatar of the Resolute), creature types (Arahbo, the First Fang), gods (Titania, Gaea Incarnate), planes (Soul of Ravnica), and even other avatars (Scion of the Ur-Dragon).

Notable cards

Death's Shadow spawned a Modern deck of the same name.[1]

Sylvan Primordial is banned in Commander due to its game-warping power in a casual multiplayer format.[2][3]

Species

Archaics

Main article: Arcavios § Archaics

The Archaics of Arcavios are a race of wise, giant, long-lived beings with an innate talent for magic. They can be seen striding through the Vastlands, exploring sources of magic with their many arms, or contemplating existence through their "eye", which is a magical focus of some kind. Archaics can live for thousands of years; many are thought to have been alive since the Dawning Age. Mages seek out Archaics for their vast knowledge of history and magic, but Archaics tend to communicate in obscure allusions and cryptic metaphors.[4]

Spirit avatars of Shadowmoor

In the Seer's Parables, the origin of the world of Shadowmoor and various aspects of the world are attributed to the powerful spirit avatars to be found throughout the plane's history.[5] According to Mark Rosewater, these creatures might have been given the God or Demigod subtype instead, had those subtypes existed at the time.[6]

Death's shadows

Dangerous avatars known as Death's Shadows can be found on Zendikar, although some consider them more like demons. They grant enormous power to the weak and damaged ones by putting them in a near-death state, but they are uninterested in people with high vital strength.[citation needed]

Universes Beyond

A number of Avatar cards appear in Universes Beyond products; excluding reprints, they are all legendary, representing specific characters. The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth uses the Avatar creature type for Maiar characters like Gandalf, Sauron, and the Balrog. Avatar: The Last Airbender uses it for the titular Avatar Aang. Several Avatars appear in Final Fantasy; many of them are double-faced cards which transform or meld into Avatars, such as Kefka, Court Mage // Kefka, Ruler of Ruin. Marvel's Spider-Man featured Spider-Byte as an avatar as they operate in a virtual world.
