Hyena is a creature type first used for Gibbering Hyenas in Mirage, but in pluralized form. The first actual printing of this type was in Unhinged.

History

Hyenas were made Hounds in the Grand Creature Type Update, but that was reverted in the Update from the Grand Update, probably for taxonomic reasons.

More recently, Trusty Companion has been featured in Kaladesh, indicating that this is now a proper creature type. Hyenas are therefore now represented in both green and white. Amonkhet would later introduce hyenas in red via Hyena Pack.

Hyena-folk

The first hyena-folk was introduced on Cackling Prowler (Foundations). Their culture and plane of origin remain unknown.
