Updated to Jellyfish

Avizoa is an obsolete creature type for cards that represent a species of flying jellyfish native to Dominaria.

History

Avizoa was introduced in Weatherlight on the eponymous Avizoa card. During the Magic Online digital release of Weatherlight, just before the Grand Creature Type Update, the type was given errata to just be Jellyfish. As the card is on the Reserved List, it has never been reprinted with its new type line.

Storyline

Thus far, Avizoa have only appeared on Dominaria, though the similar Esperzoa and Gomazoa can be found Alara and Zendikar, respectively.

Dominaria

Avizoa appear to be large floating jellyfish that move through the skies of Dominaria. Similar to their sea-based counterparts, they have a gelatinous upper body with various tentacles coming down from it. Their tentacles are strong enough to grab and lift humans. Tahngarth once thought to trap Avizoa with bait, thinking to use Squee as the bait.[1] Nael is a Yavimayan elf scout known as the Avizoa Aeronaut who uses Avizoa to fly by attaching a bucket to them, similar to a hot air balloon.[2] During her travels, she once noticed a flock of avizoa floating in the sky, and after several failed experiments, she found herself soaring above the clouds alongside them, getting a view of Dominaria that few get a chance to appreciate.[3]
