Jellyfish is a primarily blue creature type used for cards depicting transparent free-swimming (or flying) bell-shaped creatures with tentacles and stingers. Note that jellyfish, which are invertebrates and don't have gills, are not fish.

History

The first creature to bear the type was Man-o'-War in Visions, though Avizoa from Weatherlight was later issued errata to become Jellyfish as well. While the flying Avizoa hail from Dominaria, the similar Esperzoa and Gomazoa are from Alara and Zendikar, respectively.

The type made its largest return yet in Edge of Eternities for the Illvoi, sapient jellyfish-like beings that live in the Edge.

Storyline

Alara

Alara is home to the flying Esperzoa, which are artifact jellyfish that feed on and digest metal, which makes their jelly fetch high prices from alchemists.[1]

Dominaria

Domainaria is home to flying jellyfish known as the Avizoa. It is also home to more traditional sea-based Man-o'-War.

Ikoria

Ikoria is home to the Glimmberbell, which are elemental flying jellyfish that were once studied by a Ketria elementalist named Naireh to determine how they moved. He believed that their paths weren't random despite not floating with the wind and posited that they may be following surges in crystalline energy.[2]

Kamigawa

On Kaimgawa, the Reality Chip was created as an artifact equipment jellyfish, a piece of illegal biotechnology with tentacles coming out of its bottom so it can attach to other creatures.

New Phyrexia

New Phyrexia compleated a form of jellyfish into the Watchful Blisterzoa, which is a flying phyrexian jellyfish that has eyes on the bottom of each of its tentacles so it can act as a sentry for Uulbrek. [3]

Ravnica

Ravnica is home to anemones, which are found growing out of the sea floor of its waterways. The Simic also created a hybrid Jellyfish Hydra Beast known as the Hydroid Krasis, which has the upper body of a jellyfish with hydra heads as tentacles.

Zendikar

Zendikar is home to its own species of flying jellyfish known as the Gomazoa, which can become dormant. They can be dangerous and grab humans. It has been said that To explorers the term “point man” is a polite way of saying “gomazoa fodder.”[4] Guard Gomazo are known to linger near the outposts of the Makindi Trenches providing them with a layer of defense.[5]

The Edge

The Sothera system of the Edge is home to the humanoid Illvoi. It is also home to Mechanozoa, which are large robot jellyfish that can grab spacecraft in the sky.

Unknown plane

An unknown plane is home to the Electrozoa, an electrified flying jellyfish.

Un-iverse

Bablovia in the un-iverse is home to Numbing Jellyfish, which are host creatures that can combine with others, splitting their heads or tentacles apart.

Dungeons & Dragons

In the Dungeons & Dragons crossover sets, jellyfish were used as a type for the Flumph (card), which are a mysterious and benevolent monster that siphon the thoughts and energy from evil aberrations and later share the dark knowledge they obtain with friendly adventurers.[6] This included Card.
