The CRANK! counter is a counter introduced in Unstable.[1][2] The CRANK! counter is exclusively connected to Contraption cards. It is used to track which sprocket is active, and thus, which Contraptions can be cranked each turn. At the beginning of each upkeep, it is placed onto the next sprocket. If you don't have any Contraptions on the battlefield, then you don't need to move the CRANK! counter.
