The Grand Calcutron, born Calvin Granderson, is the founder and leader of the Order of the Widget in Bablovia.[1] Having replaced most of his body with machinery, Grand Calcutron is no longer considered human.[2]

History

Early augmentations

Calvin Granderson was an inventor with an unusually strong love of toast.[1] His transformation into the Grand Calcutron first began during a vacation, when he found himself without access to a toaster. On his return home, he designed and built a portable toaster to avoid repeating the experience. While the toaster worked during his next vacation, he took a day trip to Port Gizmo and assumed he would not need to bring it for that day. A bedtime craving for toast made Calvin realize that he couldn't be without a toaster at all. This inconvenience inspired him to replace his left hand with his portable toaster, reasoning that his right hand sufficed for most of his daily tasks. Calvin's unique approach to solving everyday problems drew the attention of other Bablovians.

Building from this innovation, Calvin replaced part of his upper right leg with a refrigeration unit to store butter for his toast. Later, he modified his right index finger into a butter knife, enabling him to prepare buttered toast at any time.

Body modification movement

News of Calvin's self-modifications spread rapidly, inspiring others in Bablovia to adopt similar augmentations.[1] Calvin's modifications for personal convenience evolved into a social and technological movement. People began replacing various body parts with functional devices, transforming the idea of bodily improvement into a wider philosophy. To support this growing community, Calvin established the Order of the Widget. The organization provided resources and a shared identity for those interested in enhancing themselves with practical technological implants. While his personal story emphasized convenience, the Order soon became known for its broader commitment to helping people through inventive solutions.

Calvin's dedication to technological enhancement continued throughout his life. Over time, he replaced more than 90% of his body with machines designed to improve his functionality and manage the Order’s operations. With such extensive modifications, Calvin decided to change his name as well; first to Calcutron Granderson and ultimately to Grand Calcutron.

Order of the Widget

The Grand Calcutron remains the leader of the Order of the Widget, which he has guided for over five decades.[1] Having upgraded himself so extensively, the Grand Calcutron is no longer considered human.[2]

Design

During the design of Unstable, the Grand Calcutron had the rules text "this can be your commander".[3] During editing, the text had to be removed as it no longer fitted on the card.

Following the set's release, Mark Rosewater issued "official Blogatog errata", reinstating the the use of the The Grand Calcutron as a commander in silver-bordered Commander games.[4]
