This page is intended to be an update to the article Counter Development by Christopher Bellach, published on magicthegathering.com on September 5, 2018.[1] The original article was a showcase of all the new counter icons being launched in Magic Online (MTGO or MODO), which counters they apply to, and whether that counter is a positive (green), negative (orange), or neutral (blue) effect.
In the years since the article's publication, MTGO has added a couple of new counter icons while Magic at large has added dozens of new counters. Keyword counters became part of the game starting with Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths and have been added to Magic Online using the keyword icon in a purple counter.
Keyword counters
These counters are placed on permanents and give those cards the associated keyword ability. Each icon is displayed inside a purple counter.
Player counters
These counters are given to players rather than placed on cards.
