type:"Alicorn"

Alicorn is an acorn creature type representing a race of flying Unicorns. It is a crossover type from the My Little Pony franchise.[1]

History

Traditionally, writers used the word "Alicorn" to denote a unicorn's actual horn, which is purported to have magical healing powers.[2] The first recorded use for a crossbreed pegasus-unicorn was in the 1984 fantasy novel Bearing an Hourglass by Piers Anthony. The first appearance of the name in My Little Pony was during the third season of My Little Pony Friendship is Magic in 2012.

The type was introduced to Magic: The Gathering with the 2019 Ponies: The Galloping promotional charity set (Princess Twilight Sparkle). A second card was added with Ponies: The Galloping 2 in 2023 (Nightmare Moon // Princess Luna).

Trivia

  • The name is sometimes explained as being a combination of "Alate" (wing, winged) and "Unicorn"
  • If there were ever to be a creature in a regular set that is flavorfully both a unicorn and a pegasus, it probably would be typed as a Pegasus Unicorn.[3]
  • Princess Twilight Sparkle is a lord for alicorns, unicorns, horses, pegasuses and ponies.
