Devouring Deep is an obsolete creature type for a species of fish from Dominaria.
History
Devouring Deep originally debuted as a type in Legends on the eponymous named Devouring Deep. The type was later made obsolete as part of the Grand Creature Type Update with the release of Lorwyn and became a Fish instead.[1] The Devouring Deep appears to be a long serpent-like eel with a long mouth of sharp teeth as well as large fins on its side and back. It appears to be mostly green in color with orange spots throughout its body.
Storyline
Caliphear and Altair once stumbled upon a gathering where a Samite Healer was going to burn a Devouring Deep at the stake, as it was part of an army that attacked them. Caliphear assisted with questioning the Deep using her nightmare powers for answers and revealed its darkest fear is the visage of Merfolk Assassins. Altair prevented Caliphear from further torturing the Deep, and it confessed to serving the wizard Coldraith of Golthonor.[2] This implies the Devouring Deep has some manner of intelligence.
Trivia
- Devouring Deep has never been reprinted with its new type line.
- Devouring Deep was one of the early cards with a real world quotation as its flavor text, quoting The Tempest by William Shakespear.
