Kavu (pl. Kavu)[2] is a mainly red and green creature type used for cards that depict carnivorous mutant reptiles with long, low heads, square jaws and four or six legs. They were introduced in the Invasion block. Sapient Kavu-folk called Kav can be found in The Edge, a region of space at the very limits of the Multiverse.
Description
Kavu have always been thought to be native to Dominaria.[3] They are fifteen feet tall, with heavy back limbs and sharp, quick forelimbs.[4] They have thick, hoofed fingers that allow them to be equally nimble on land or in trees. Kavu come in all sizes and shapes, quickly adapting themselves to their environment.[5] Their size ranges from that of a large dog to that of two elephants.[6]
Kavu translates either to "ever watchful" or to "carved from stone."[6]
History
From what is known, they are an ancient species that at some point hibernated beneath Dominaria's surface. During the Phyrexian Invasion, Multani's magic revived them, and they immediately went about fighting the war. Shiv and Yavimaya seemed to have the greatest concentration of powerful Kavu dormant beneath them. Gaea may have had a hand in their creation or their awakening, a belief which is common among the Llanowar elves.[7][8]
When the Kavu emerged from their ancient nests, food chains long dormant became vibrant again. It was said that it took Yavimaya a thousand years to breed them, but that it took only seconds for them to prove their worth. To the Kavu, all Phyrexians were merely crunchy snacks. Dominarians gladly fought alongside them until the Kavu figured out some Dominarians were quite tasty, too.
After the invasion, the Kavu have become a regular presence on Dominaria for quite some time. Enough so, to have become entrenched in the local culture.[9][10] In Llanowar, especially in the Kelfae elfhame, the Kavu have become integrated in the elvish lifestyle, now bred as a means of travel, warfare, labor and occasional food.[11][8]
Kav
In a strange reflection of the Multiverse, sapient Kavu-folk called Kav can be found in the Edge, a region of space at the very limits of the Multiverse.[12][13] They are native to the planet Kavaron, and organized in the Kavaronic Federal Empire.
Because the Kav evolved on their bellies, they describe the world by touch rather than sight; a Kav may say that something "feels good" rather than "looks good."[14] Their reaction time is also much faster than humans': Kav reaction time to visual stimulus can be less than 20 milliseconds, compared to 150 milliseconds to touch in humans.[15] Rather than short- and long-term memories, Kav have stable attention stacks. They refer to this shifting present as the Long Now.[16] Because they evolved to be tossed around by larger beasts, Kav relax when surprised or stressed. Their heads are crowned with horn-hairs or hair-horns, they shed their scales, and their blood is green. They have a poison-taster sinus, through which they can sift air to test its toxicity.[17] Their brains are regenerative like human livers, capable of processing physical trauma.
Most of the Kav who survived now inhabit massive mining stations positioned above and around the shattered remains of Kavaron.[12] The majority of these Kav work as miners, moxite hunters, or serve on memorial crews that form the core of the Kav Memorial Navy (KMN). Whether operating as miners or sailors, Kav are known for their practical skills in combat, favoring physical and martial approaches to challenges, and displaying fierce dedication to their duties. Additionally, some Kav offer their expertise as mercenaries to mining teams from other species, providing both guidance and protection to outside crews navigating the dangerous ruins of their ancestral homeworld.
Most Kav speak Imperial Kfar, although many know Psimer.[15] Both female and cormale genders use she/her pronouns.
