Tannuk, or Tan, is a Kav pilot from the Sothera system in the Edge. He is the best friend and first mate of Sami.
Description
Tannuk is the first mate and flight engineer of the Seriema.[1] He is small for a Kav — a positive trait for a pilot — but still large compared to a human, and has large ears.[2] He has been identified by Pinnacle as an eldrazi protobeing.[3] He has a phobia of making choices. His username in digital space is TAN_THE_MAN.[4]
He wears a poncho insulated with an anti-lightning liner.[5] When on potentially dangerous planets, he wears risk armor. The armor has a scentsor that samples air in its flehmen node, samples it, and renders equivalent smells from a synthetic library of scents. He carries metal-shearing work claws for artifact retrieval and self-defense.[4]
History
Tannuk was trained for years as a Kavaron Memorial Navy pilot to navigate the Mordraine Ring and battle raiders.[1][2] While serving as a command pilot and lead daunt, he commanded the Guns of Kavaron to fire on a bolide headed for the city of Summotank.[6] Although he spared the city's four million inhabitants, his choice led to the death of twenty-five thousand in another village. Because the Kav believe in solidarity against disaster, Tan's decision violated Kav ethics, and he was banished from the planet. Exiled from his people, Tannuk joined Sami and found the young captain to be as passionate about their crew as Tannuk was about his people.[7]
As a favor to Tezzeret, Sami and Tannuk traveled on the Seriema to Sigma's Reach to retrieve an artifact.[1] They were also still on the lookout for Mirri. They found the Endstone and brought it back to their ship.[4]
While traveling to Kavaron for a stasis cask to hold the stone, they witnessed Alpharael's Hopelight warmaker crashing into the debris field. They managed to save the Monoist, and traveled to the nearby Kav colony of Taro-duend to seek medical help for a Kav patrol that the ship's thrusters had irradiated on its way into the atmosphere.[6] However, Alpharael had been followed by the Sunstar Free Company, who knew about the causality-influencing powers of the rock the duo had found - the Endstone - and suspected him to be one of its chosen. One of the Summist soldiers, Haliya, snuck onto the Seriema and tried to take the stone from Alpharael, but he fought her off, allowing Sami and Tannuk to access the ship's controls and flee Kavaron. As they left, the Summists massacred the innocent civilians in Taro-duend to purge the influence of the Endstone, leading Haliya to decide that it could not fall into their hands.[8]
