Antelope is a creature type and species used for cards that depict various swift-running ruminant mammals having long horns and a slender build.

History

The first creature to bear the type was Graceful Antelope in Odyssey. During the Grand Creature Type Update Stampeding Wildebeests from Visions was issued errata so that its type Wildebeest became an Antelope Beast. Other species that have come under the Antelope type have included Wildebeests, Serows, Oryxes, Kudus, and Hartebeests. The Pronghorn is colloquially known as an antelope, but technically is not one, though it has come under the type. Similarly, the Okapi is not an antelope but a Giraffid, both of which fall under the type.

Storyline

Amonkhet

Amonkhet is home to Ornery Kudu, a type of antelope with brown fur, black stripes, and large golden horns. The viziers debate whether their horns are blasphemy or reverence to the God-Pharaoh.[1]

Dominaria

Antelopes were first seen on the plains of Dominaria, where herds of Graceful Antelope roam on Otaria.[2] Otari also has Trained Pronghorn, which are a type of antelope that dwells in the desert that are trained by Nomads. They have a myth that the desert asked the Ancestor for children, which led to the pronghorn being born.[3] Hystrodon have been seen hunting them.

Jamuraa has Stampeding Wildebeests which are classified as antelope beasts. They are muscular with white and brown fur and curved horns. Stampedes of these animals have been described as the most violent and destructive storms in Femeref.[4]

Ikoria

Ikoria features a race of hybrid Antelope Lizards known as Flycatcher Giraffids. This hybrid species looks like antelopes with extremely long necks and a long, lizard-like tongue with which they catch insects. Poachers on the plane will use their harvested tongues to create snare traps for pests, to plumb caves, or to scale tall buildings.[5]

Kamigawa

During the time of the Kami War, the plane had groups of Stampeding Serow, which are smaller fury antelopes with short horns.

Lorywyn

The elves of Lorwyn will sometimes ride antelopes as they lead hunts.[6]

Ravnica

The Wary Okapi are found on Ravnica. They are a light and dark brown furred type of antelope. They are grazers that keep their herd close while staying alert for any encroaching danger. Lalia, a Selesnya dryad, tells others to try to be like them.[7]

Theros

While it's not known if Theros has any native antelopes, it does have the Treeshaker Chimera, which is a large four-legged chimera with the head of an antelope, lion, and wolf.

Zendikar

Zendikar features a unique antelope species known as the Gladehart. The Grazing Gladehart appears as a very muscular antelope with horns making up its entire forehead, growing out into four large horns. Elves are known to ride them as cavalry.[8] Yon Basrel stated not to be fooled by their appearance as it wouldn't have survived on the plane if it were as docile as it seems.[9] The plane also has another species known as the Totem-Guide Hartebeest, which is a dark-haired magical antelope with numerous horns. Its magic draws others to it, causing it to be hunted.[10]

Unknown

Emerald Oryx inhabit an unknown plane, which are antelopes with emerald horns and bones of emerald. Whenever one of them dies, it's said that its flesh returns to the earth while its emerald bones remain as a tribute to the forest.[11].
