The Ancestor is a sky goddess worshiped by The Order and the nomads of the Daru Plains in Otaria.[1]
Description
The nomads believe that the Ancestor created all life on Otaria, including humans and aven. Daru life centered around worship of the Ancestor, and the clerics and mystics devoted to her wielded considerable influence. Whether this truly exists is unclear.
History
Myth
According to legend, humans borrowed life from the Ancestor, becoming her children.[2] The desert asked the Ancestor for children of her own, and antelope were born.[3] When the Ancestor saw the cruelty of humanity, her fury shook the world, creating warthogs.[4] At a time known as the Reapportionment, the Ancestor granted Eagle partial humanity, creating the Aven.[5] Animal spirits are considered the grandchildren of the Ancestor, while Aven spirits are guided directly to the home of the Ancestor by holy couriers.[6]
Worship
With the destruction of Otaria in Karona's War, many Otarians, both aven and human, fled to Benalia, bringing their religious worship of the Ancestor with them. Since that time, the Serran church has adopted the doctrine saying that the Ancestor was a guise or an aspect of Serra, introducing different aspects of the Otarian faith into another branch of the Serran tradition.[7][8][9]
